According to the data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction (SOC) the most common exterior wall materials on homes started in 2018 were vinyl siding and stucco. Vinyl siding and Stucco (26 percent each) were used on new homes started in 2018, brick or brick veneer (21 percent), and fiber cement siding (such as Hardiplank or Hardiboard) (20 percent). Far smaller shares of single family homes started last year had wood or wood products (5 percent) or stone or rock (1 percent) as the principal exterior wall material.
The Census Bureau’s SOC data is available by the nine census divisions and there are substantial differences in the use of siding across divisions. Vinyl siding was the most widely used primary exterior material in 4 out of 9 census divisions. In the Middle Atlantic and New England, 74 percent of the new homes started in 2018 used vinyl siding. In the East and West North Central divisions, vinyl siding accounted for 65 and 48 percent respectively.
Stucco was the most common widely used as the primary exterior wall material in the Pacific, Mountain and South Atlantic divisions in 2018: 59 percent, 52 percent and 35 percent, respectively, of the new single family homes started in those areas used it. Brick or brick veneer was the top choice in East and West South Central divisions. In the West South Central, 69 percent of the new single-family homes started in 2018 used Brick or brick veneer as the primary exterior material, compared to 46 percent in East South Central division.
Is the stucco referenced in this article true stucco, or is it Dryvit type siding simply referred to as stucco? There’s a huge difference and in my opinion Dryvit shouldn’t be referred to as stucco.
It is self-reported as stucco in the Census data by the builder. So if stucco is a better classifier than other categories (esp vinyl siding), it will be classified as stucco.
Rob, Can you email me the two graphics that are in the story? Thanks.
This is a very interesting article. I love hearing the statistics behind siding. I personally went with vinyl, but it’s not very common in Dallas anyways.
