Modest Increase in Housing Production

Housing starts and permits rose modestly in March after a very disappointing February. Total housing starts increased 2% to an annual rate of 926,000 from an upwardly revised 908,000 in February. Total private residential spending increased over the revised August estimate to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $349.1 billion. The September month-over-month increase of 0.4% was driven by a solid month-over-month increase in the single-family component of private residential construction.
